Newberry Library. Facilities Management Department.

Since its founding, the Newberry Library has had a department concerned with building maintenance and security.

Over the years, the department has reported to the Librarian, the Controller, and to the Associate (later Deputy) Librarian. In 1983, an Administrative Services Division, including security and maintenance, was formed under Robert J. Callahan. The Division was soon disbanded and Facilities Manager Richard J. West again reported directly to Joel Samuels. By 1988, a Facilities Manager and Chief Security Officer had been appointed and reported to the Controller and later (1990) the Vice President for Finance and Administration.
