William Hutt was born in 1920 and raised in Toronto. During World War II he earned the Military Medal for his frontline services as a medic. Subsequently he graduated from Trinity College University of Toronto, where he started acting at the Hart House Theatre. In the late 1940s Hutt made his debut in Ontario summer stock companies and was recruited by Ottawa's Canadian Repertory Theatre. He joined the Stratford Festival in its inaugural season in 1953 and has come to be closely associated with the Festival's Shakespeare repertoire, playing most of Shakespeare's lead roles in over sixty productions. Hutt has been actor, director and associate director at Stratford, and has appeared in New York, Edinburgh, throughout Europe and in Australia. The actor has also worked at the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario; the Vancouver Playhouse; and the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1969 and received the Governor General's Award for lifetime achievement in 1992. Hutt holds honourary doctorates from the Universities of Ottawa, Guelph, Western Ontario, McMaster and Toronto.
