Meyer, Adolph, 1842-1908
Adolph Meyer (October 19, 1842 – March 8, 1908) was a member of the U. S. House of Representatives representing Louisiana's 1st congressional district. He served nine terms as a Democrat from 1891 until his death in office in 1908.
Born in Natchez, Mississippi, he attended the common schools before matriculating at the University of Virginia. Before graduating, Meyer enlisted in the Confederate Army, eventually on the staff of Brigadier General John Stuart Williams of Kentucky and attaining the rank of assistant adjutant general. He returned to Natchez and worked as a planter before moving to New Orleans where he engaged in banking. In 1879, he was elected colonel of the First Regiment of the Louisiana State National Guard; in 1881, Governor Louis Wiltz appointed him brigadier general of the First Brigade, embracing all the uniformed militia in the State.
