Freilicher, Jane, 1924-2014
Jane Freilicher was an American painter. Born in 1924 in Brooklyn, New York, she attended Brooklyn College and then studied with artist Hans Hofmann. She left the Hofmann studio in 1948 to paint in New York City, collaborating with a group of artist and writer friends known collectively as the New York School and including John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, Frank O'Hara, Larry Rivers, and James Schuyler. She married jazz pianist Jack Freilicher when she was 17; the marriage was annulled five years later, and in 1957 she married former dancer Joe Hazan, with whom she had one daughter, Elizabeth, in 1965. The couple built a house in Water Mill, N.Y. Freilicher began to show her work at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York in 1952, also exhibiting at the Fischbach Gallery in New York.
