White, C. A. (Charles Abiathar), 1826-1910
American geologist and paleontologist. White was born in North Dighton, Mass. Later he moved to Burlington, Iowa where he worked as a carpenter and set about educating himself in the fields of medicine and geology before attending the University of Michigan and Rush Medical College. Professionally he practiced medicine in Iowa City; served as the Iowa state geologist (1866-1869); taught natural history at Iowa State University (1867-1873) and Bowdoin College (1873-1875); served as a geologist and paleontologist for the U.S. Geological Survey (1874-1892); and held the position of Curator of Paleontology at the U.S. National Museum (1879-1882). Clark authored 238 publications and received various awards including being named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; special life-time membership to the Biological Society of Washington; and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree conferred by Iowa State University.
