Charleston Port Society for Promoting the Gospel Among Seamen
Charleston, S.C., interdenominational missionary society chartered in 1823 to evangelize and minister to the needs of merchant seamen and their families. The Port Society established a sailors' home, a cemetery, and a chapel. Chaplains included Joseph Brown (1823-1832), I.A. Mitchell (1833-1836), William Black Yates (1836-1883), and Charles Edward Chichester (1884-1898).
