North Carolina Academy of Science.
Founded in 1902 by William W. Ashe and Franklin Sherman, the North Carolina Academy of Science's first president was William L. Poteat. The NCAS is now a three-tiered organization that includes Senior (faculty and graduate students), Collegiate (undergraduates), and Student (middle and high school students) academies. The Senior Academy provides awards for deserving students, plans the annual meeting, supports the Journal of the Elisha Mitchell Scientific Society (JEMSS), and serves as the scientific voice of the state. The Academy has vigorously voiced their opinions about evolution and the preservation of natural resources. Cf. Webster, Wm. David. "North Carolina Academy of Science (NCAS)."
