Andrews, George Leonard, 1828-1899.

Union Brigadier General George L. Andrews graduated at the top of his West Point Military Academy class. After commanding troops in numerous engagements, he was appointed commander of the Department of the Gulf in 1863. He assumed command of the Port Hudson, Louisiana, post in 1864. Andrews also was involved in recruiting efforts for black troops, and served as provost marshal of Union forces in operations against Mobile, Alabama, in 1865.
