In the 1980s the U. S. Department of Energy led an effort to establish nuclear waste disposal sites in several states, one of which was Texas. The site selected was in Deaf Smith County. The proposal for Deaf Smith County fell through because of protests from the local community. Opposition was due in part to concerns for the Ogallala aquifer and the agricultural production. Leading the protests were the organizations of Serious Texans Against Nuclear Dumping, headquartered in Tulia, Texas, and the People Opposed to Wasted Energy Repositories, headquartered in Hereford, Texas.
