At the end of World War II, the Hungarian Crown guard transferred the Crown of St. Stephen, a symbol of the Hungarian nation, to U.S. Army officers to prevent the Crown from falling into the hands of the Soviet army. Later, Cold War tensions prevented the crown from being returned to the Hungarian people. In 1978, the Crown was returned to Hungary by order of President Jimmy Carter.
