Rockefeller, John D. (John Davison), 1839-1937
John D. Rockefeller, Sr., was an industrialist, philanthropist, founder of The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (Rockefeller University), The Rockefeller Foundation, and the University of Chicago. Under his leadership, the Standard Oil Company established itself as the most important factor in the petroleum industry in America.
As early as 1890 Rockefeller began to organize a system of philanthropic giving as a means of achieving the most efficient disposition of his vast private fortune. It is estimated that the total amount given by John D. Rockefeller for philanthropic purposes exceeded $500 million. His benefactions to education, to national and international health movements, religion and to various charities made him one of the world's most noteable philanthropists.
