Muñoz Marín, Luis, 1898-1980

Luis Muñoz Marín, a Puerto Rican writer and political leader, was the first elected governor of Puerto Rico. His father, Luis Muñoz Rivera (1859-1916), was elected in 1910 as Puerto Rico's resident commissioner in Washington, D.C. Muñoz Marín was a strong advocate of increased autonomy for Puerto Rico, while believing that the island should maintain its economically beneficial ties with the United States. He was governer from 1949 to 1965, and was the principal founder of the Commonwealth (Estado Libre Asociado) of Puerto Rico in 1952. He died in 1980.
