Indian Student Placement Program (General Church : 1954-1973)

The Indian Placement Program was a program in which Native American (Lamanite) students were voluntarily placed into white (Anglo) foster homes during the school year. This program began in 1947 in response to the needs of Navajo teenagers who expressed a desire to stay in Utah so they could get a better education. Eventually the program became part of Latter-day Saint Social Services, now LDS Family Services. The program officially ended in 1996.
