Gilbert, Kevin, 1933-1993

Poet, playwright, artist and Aboriginal rights activist. While imprisoned for his wife's murder (1959-71) he began writing and producing linocuts. He was instrumental in establishing the Aboriginal tent embassy in Canberra in 1972. His publications include the play "The Cherry pickers"; the volumes of poetry "End of dreamtime" (1971), "People are legends" (1978) and "The Blackside" (1990); the political tract "Because a white man'll never do it (1973); and a collection of interviews with Aboriginal "Living Black" (1978). His book "Child's dreaming" (1992) was a view of the bush through a black child's eyes. His last book of verse, "Black from the edge" (1994) was published posthumously.
