Concord Academy (Concord, Mass. : 1822)

Private school established in Concord, Mass., in 1822; opened in Sept., 1823. Original proprietors: Samuel Hoar; Abiel Heywood; Josiah Davis; Nathan Brooks; William Whiting. First schoolmaster George Folsom was succeeded by Josiah Barnes, then Richard Hildreth, then Phineas Allen, whose tenure lasted from 1827 to 1836. Allen's Concord Academy pupils included the children of families in Acton, Boston, Brookline, Concord, Grafton, Groton, Harvard, and Lincoln, Mass. Among Allen's students: Sarah Dodge Atwill; Caroline Downes Brooks; George Merrick Brooks; Josiah Gardner Davis.

(Cont.) Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar; Elizabeth Sherman Hoar; Sarah Sherman Hoar; John Shepard Keyes; Elizabeth H. Prichard; William M. Prichard; Henry Shattuck; Henry David Thoreau; John Thoreau; Henry Vose; Ann Maria Whiting; Louisa Jane Whiting; William Whiting. Allen (born in Medfield, Mass., 1801; died in West Newton, 1885) received his B.A. from Harvard in 1825. A life-long teacher, he taught in West Newton from 1860 until his death.
