Bell, Allyn R., 1909-2006

Allyn R. Bell was born Sept. 2, 1909 in Atlantic City, New Jersey and graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1926. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School in 1931 with a major in accounting. In 1977 he recieved an honorary doctoral degree in economics from Soongsil University (Korea). On Sept. 1, 1934 he married Martha Shute. They had four sons. Between 1933 and 1957 Bell worked for various Pew family enterprises. In 1957 he was named president of the newly formed Glenmede Trust Company. After he retired from Glenmede in 1977, he served on the boards of the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (South Hamilton, Massachusetts), Christianity Today magazine, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Presbyterian Hospital (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), and Grove City College (Pennsylvania). During the Glenmede years the Bells lived in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. In 1980 the Bells retired to North Carolina.
