Gilbert, J. Allen (Joshua Allen), 1867-1948.
J. Allen Gilbert (April 5, 1867- April 18, 1948) was a medical doctor who practiced in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from Oterbein University (Germany) in 1889. He married Florence Zerwekh in Dayton, Ohio and they had a daughter, Dorothea. Mrs. Gilbert died on December 19, 1917, which prompted Dr. Gilbert to undertake a worldwide search for her spirit. However, after seven years he called off the search, declaring it a failure. Gilbert and his daughter wrote to each other extensively from the 1920s to the 1940s. During Gilbert's career he wrote a number of articles for professional journals.
