Geologist, metallurgist, translator and author of Columbia, S.C.; born Boston, Mass.; educated at Berlin, G:ottingen, and the mining school at Freiberg, in Saxony, Germany; appointed, 1850-1851, State Geologist of Mississippi; elected, 1855, by South Carolina Legislature to post of State Mineralogical, Geological, and Agricultural Surveyor; son of Francis Lieber (1800-1872).
