Gilliss, Walter, 1855-1925
New York City printer who operated the Gilliss Press with his brother Frank and was known for his classic taste in book design. Walter Gilliss served as typographical advisor to Doubleday, Page & Co., while his own press printed over 300 books for private individuals and bibliophile societies. His masterpiece of design and execution is generally considered to be The iconography of Manhattan Island by I. N. Phleps Stokes. Gilliss was a founding member of the Grolier Club in 1884 and served as its secretary from 1906 to 1925.
