Massachusetts Art Commission

The Massachusetts Art Commission (named by statute the Art Commission for the Commonwealth) consists of five gubernatorial appointees serving five-year terms. Established by St 1910, c 422, it was placed in the governor's department by St 1919, c 350, s 16. As currently defined in MGLA c 60, s 20, its responsibilities include advisory approval relating to plans for creation, acquisition, construction, erection, or remodeling by the Commonwealth of any work of art; or to the artistic character of any building constructed, erected, or remodeled by the Commonwealth; and custody and care of all historical relics and works of art, including portraits and certain memorials, in the State House, with removal of any such objects being subject to approval by the General Court.
