Army officer; served in U.S. Army 1849-1861; resigned to enter Confederate Army and rose to major general; officer in Egyptian Army, 1875-1877. Doorkeeper, U.S. House of Representatives, 1878; civil engineer, 1881-1885; superintendent Hot Springs (Ark.) Indian Reservation, 1887-1889.
