Raisz, Erwin, 1893-1968

Erwin Josephus Raisz (1893-1968), cartographer and geographer, was born in Locse, Hungary. He came to the United States in 1923, working first for the American Geographical Society in New York City, and later for Harvard's Institute of Geographical Exploration from the 1930s through the 1950s, producing hand-drawn maps with great character and elegant calligraphy. His General Cartography (1938) was the first book of its kind in the English language, and remained so for some fifteen years. His Principles of Cartography was published in 1962.
