Richard, Édouard 1844-1904

Canadian lawyer, politician, businessman, and historian.

When poor health kept him from pursuing his legal and political careers, Richard, a great-grandson of Acadian exiles, devoted himself to the study of Acadian history, and in 1895 published "Acadia, missing links of a lost chapter in American history," in which he studies the deportation of the Acadians, and criticizes the views of the historian Parkman and the archivist Akins. In 1896, he replaced Joseph Marmette as Canadian archivist in France, and the results of the six years he spent in Paris engaged in historical research are published in the Reports of the Canadian archives for 1899, 1904, and 1905.
