Universalist minister at Gloucester, Mass. 1838-41; son of Elias Smith; brother of Matthew Hale Smith; came to Gloucester from Portland, Me.; left Gloucester for Richmond, Va. where he was editor of Christian warrior; trained to practice medicine; returned to Gloucester, 1844-48; later homeopath at Brooklyn, N.Y.
