Brown, James Baldwin, 1820-1884
James Brown was a landscape, marine, genre, and portrait painter. He was born in New York State around 1820 and worked as an artist in New York City at least from 1844-1855, exhibiting at the American Art-Union and the National Academy of Design. In 1859, Brown was in St. Louis working as a photographer. Two of Brown's paintings are known to have appeared in print, and at least two of his pictures were made into lithographs that were used as book illustrations.
