McClelland, Robert, 1807-1880

Robert McClelland was a Michigan congressmen and governor. He was born in Greencastle, Pennsylvania on August 1, 1807, and graduated from Dickinson College, Carlistle, Pennsylvania in 1829. He worked as a teacher before his admission to the Pennsylvania bar in 1831. McClelland moved to Monroe, Michigan two years later, becoming delegate in the state constitution convention in 1835. Robert McClelland served as Governor of Michigan, 1851-1853 and Secretary of the Interior, 1853-1857. He died in Detroit on August 27, 1880.
