Schwartz, George M. (George Melvin), 1892-
George Melvin Schwartz was born on September 23, 1892 in Oakfield, Wisconsin. He earned his B.A. in 1915 and M.A. in 1916 from the University of Wisconsin. He was awarded his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1923. In 1919, he joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota as an instructor of geology and mineralogy. Dr. Schwartz was promoted to assistant professor in 1928, associate professor in 1934 and professor in 1944. In 1947, Dr. Schwartz was appointed as director the Minnesota Geological Survey. In 1954, Dr. Schwartz and a colleague assembled a map of Minnesota's mineral resources, the first map of its type published in the state. He served as director of the survey and professor of geology until he retired as professor emeritus in 1961. George M. Schwartz died on December 23, 1980.
