New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology
The New Mexico School of Mines was established by a legislative act in 1889 (1889 Laws of N.M., Chp. 138, Sec. 1). In 1951 a legislative act changed the name to New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (1951 Laws of N.M., Chp. 46, Sec. 1). Within the Institute is the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources, which was established by a legislative act in 1927 (1927 Laws of N.M., Chp. 115, Sec. 1). The Bureau is the state agency responsible for investigating, studying, and reporting on the geology of New Mexico. The Institute of Mining and Technology's purpose is to provide education in chemistry, metallurgy, mineralogy, geology, mining, milling, engineering, mathematics, and mechanical drawing. It is located in Socorro, New Mexico.
