A feature of the Park Slope neighborhood, the Prospect Park YMCA, has been serving Brooklyn for more than 112 years. Th branch has a long-standing commitment to housing programs. Seamen's House, begun in 1931 in Manhattan's Chelsea district as short-term housing for sailors in port, continues to offer seafarers housing with its affordable units for retired sailors at its Park Slope location. The branch also maintains a tradition of linkages with community groups such as literary societies, book clubs, and dance groups. The branch has offered literacy classes, job search training, and day camp programs for many years.
