Whiteaker, Mr. (John), 1820-1902

John Whiteaker (1820-1902), a Democrat, was Oregon's first state governor, 1859-1862. In private life he was a storekeeper, hence his sobriquet, "Old soap, socks, and pickles."

From the guide to the John Whiteaker papers, 1859-1862, 1859-1885, (Special Collections and University Archives, University of Oregon Libraries)
