Robert Laurence Binyon, 1869-1943

Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) was born in Lancaster, the second son of the Rev'd Frederick Binyon. He was educated at St Paul's School, London, and at Trinity College Oxford. In 1893 he entered the Department of Printed Books at the British Museum, transferring to the Department Prints and Drawings two years later. In addition to poetry he produced the Catalogue of drawings by British artists... preserved in the Department and Drawings in the British Museum (4 vols 1898-1907) and a number of other works on Far Eastern artworks. He retired from the British Museum, as keeper of the department, in 1933.

Mrs Charidea Mimina 'Dolly' Knowles (d. 1983), ne Scouloudi, was a speaker of verse. As a young woman at Oxford her services were called upon by Binyon and Masefield in their work in the movement for the speaking of verse. She participated in the Oxford festivals, and became a friend of Masefield's.
