Andrew, James O. (James Osgood), 1794-1871

James Osgood Andrew, Methodist bishop and author, was born 3 May 1794, in Wilkes County, Georgia, and died 1 March 1871, in Mobile, Alabama. He was made a deacon (1814), an elder (1816), and a bishop (1832) in the Methodist Episcopal Church; was a trustee of the Manual Labor School in Covington, Georgia, (1836); and president of the board of trustees of Emory College (1838-1870). Southern pastors, who protested when Andrew was asked to resign his bishopric because his wife owned slaves, formed the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (1845) with Andrew as a bishop. His writings include FAMILY GOVERNMENT (1847) and MISCELLANIES (1854). He retired to Alabama in 1866, where he had lived since 1855.
