Toledano, Henry

Henry Toledano was born in Meknes, Morocco, a descendant of a long line of rabbis and scholars, where he attended traditional (though Ashkenazi) Yeshivot. He immigrated to the United States in 1953. He received his B.A. from Wayne State University in 1959 and his Ph.D. in Hebrew and Arabic literature and Islamic civilization from Columbia University in 1969. Starting in 1975, Toledano served as Chairman of the Jewish Studies Program at Hofstra University, where he was a professor of Comparative Literature and Languages, teaching Hebrew and Arabic until his retirement. He has written on various aspects of Moroccan rabbinic culture, Judeo-Moslem relations, and Islamic Jurisprudence.
