The 4th Louisiana Infantry Regiment was commanded by Robert J. Barrow until 1862. During this period the commanders of companies were Captains Edward J. Pullen (Company K); James H. Wingfield (Company G); Charles E. Tooraen (Company E); John T. Hilliard (Company I); Henry A. Rauhman (Company A); Franc Whicher (Company B); F. A. Williams (Company D); Thomas E. Vick (Company A); H. M. Favrot (Company C); John B. Taylor (Company J).
The Regiment was formed at Camp Moore, La., in May 1861 and served on the Mississippi Gulf Coast until 1862, when it was ordered to Jackson, Tenn., to reinforce General Beauregard's army. The regiment fought in the battles of Shiloh (Tenn.), and Baton Rouge (La.) in 1862; New Hope Church, Peachtree Creek, Ezra Church, and Jonesboro (Ga.) in 1864.
