Rollins, Hyder Edward, 1889-1958

Hyder Edward Rollins (1889-1958) was born in Abilene, Texas. In 1910 he received a B.A. from Southwestern University, an M.A. from the University of Texas in 1912, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1917. In 1919 he went to Europe on a Harvard Sheldon Traveling Fellowship and in 1920 he was appointed assistant professor at New York University, becoming a full professor four years later. In 1926 he returned to Harvard, later succeeding George Lyman Kittredge as the Gurney Professor of English (1939-1956). Rollins never married, died in 1958, and was buried in Abilene, Texas.
