Wilbur, James Harvey, 1811-1887
James Harvey Wilbur (1811-1887) was a pioneer Methodist missionary and educator. In 1846 he was appointed a missionary to Oregon and sailed from New York to Oregon where he arrived in Oregon City in 1847. He worked in Portland for some time as preacher and in 1851 he established the Portland Academy and Female Seminary. In 1853 he moved Umpqua County where he founded the Umpqua Academy in 1854. He was appointed the superintendent of Education on the Yakima Indian Reservation in 1860. He was an Indian Agent at Fort Simcoe from 1860 to 1880.
