Academy for Lifelong Learning (Oregon State University)

The Academy of Lifelong Learning formed in 2002 to facilitate learning among active retirees in the mid-Willamette Valley and to offer retirees greater access to Oregon State University's academic resources. Peer learning, active participation, financial self-sufficiency, and self-governance were founding principles of the organization. The Academy became an affiliated program of the Oregon State University Alumni Association in 2006. Membership is open to any mature adult and does not require that an individual be an OSU alumnus or retiree. Academy of Lifelong Learning classes are offered during three terms (Fall, Winter, and Spring) each year. The Academy began with 14 classes in Spring 2002, and, as of 2009, offers about 50 classes per term across five strands: Arts, Issues and Ideas, World Cultures, Humanities, and Science. The organization is led by an Advisory Council and Curriculum Committee. Instructors include members of the organization as well as OSU faculty and individuals from the Corvallis community. Presidents of the advisory council during the span of these records include Emery Castle, Paul Dickey, Paula Krane, and Norm Seward.
