Peters, John, 1740-1788.

American Loyalist and British officer. Born in Hebron, Connecticut, and later settled in what was at that time Moorestown in Gloucester County, New York (today located in northastern Vermont). Appointed a member of Continental Congress in 1774, but refused the office's oath of secrecy. Went to Canada in 1776, were he was appointed colonel of the Queen's Loyal Rangers by Sir Guy Carleton. Served in Burgoyne's campaign and participated in the Battle of Bennington. Relocated with his family to Cape Breton when the Revolution ended and died in Paddington, England in 1788.
