Hirschberg, Gunter
Gunter Hirschberg (1920-1989) was born in Berlin. From 1936 to 1947 he lived in England and Australia where he pursued a musical career. In 1944 Gunter married Ruth Hirschberg nee Burchard, also from Germany. In 1947/1948 the Hirschbergs moved to New York City where Gunter became cantor at a congregation in Brooklyn. He was appointed cantor of the Congregation Rodeph Sholom (Manhattan) in 1952. While working in this profession, he also studied at Columbia University to finish his education. Afterwards he entered the Hebrew Union College to study for the rabbinate. In 1972 he became Senior Rabbi of Congregation Rodeph Sholom and stayed there until his death in 1989.
