Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America. Local P-1 (Ottumwa, Iowa)
John Morrell and Company started packing meat in Ottumwa in 1877. Employees first unionized in 1918 when a Local 236 of the AMCBW was chartered. In early 1937 Morrell workers disappointed with the AMCBW created a local of the Austin, Minnesota based International Union of All Workers. In May 1937 this local union became CIO Local Industrial Union 32, the first CIO local chartered in meat packing. Subsequently LIU 32 became Local 1 of the Packinghouse Workers Organizing Committee and in 1943 received its charter as Local 1 of the United Packinghouse Workers of America. UPWA Local 1 became AMCBW Local P-1 in 1968. The Morrell plant closed in 1973.
