Makin, Norman John Oswald, 1889-1982
Norman Makin was born on 31st Mar. 1889 at Petersham, N.S.W. He became an Hon. L.L.D. of Syracuse and Ohio Universities. From 1918-1919 he was President of the South Australian Labor Party, and from 1919-1946 was M.H.R. for Hindmarsh, S.A. He is a former Federal President of the Australian Labor Party. In the period from 1929-1931 he was Speaker of the House of Representatives. He was a member of the Advisory War Council from 1940, and a member of the War Cabinet. From 1941-1943 he was Minister for Navy and Munitions and from 1943-1946 Minister for Aircraft Production. He served as the first Australian Ambassador to the United States, 1946-1951, and was the first President of the United Nations Security Council. From 1954-1956 he was M.H.R. for Sturt, and from 1956-1963 for Bonython, S.A.
