The Office of Institutional Studies and Services was originally conceived as the Office of Program Planning and Analysis in 1975. The Office was renamed Institutional Studies and Services in 1978. Dr. John Lyons served as the Office's original director and continued in the capacity even after he became vice president for planning and information management in 1989. In 1992, Glenna Brown was named director. The Office serves UAB by providing data information and analysis for use in management, decision making, and planning. Objectives include the submission of state and federal reports regarding enrollment, credit hour production, etc., on behalf of the university; analysis of state appropriations and the funding formula; coordination of institutional budget development including preparation of annual appropriations requests; support for institutional level activities; development of a university-wide planning document; assistance with records management; and maintenance of staff relationships with the Alabama Commission of Higher Education.
