New Castle County (Del.). Almshouse
Wilmington's first almshouse, erected on Broom Street, in 1785; became the New Castle County Almshouse in 1792. After undergoing rebuilding and expansion, remained at that site until early 1880s at which time it was felt that the almshouse was hinderance to the development of Wilmington; in 1884 it moved into new quarters at Farnhurst, a few miles outside the city.
