The successor body of the Lutheran World Convention (1923-1947), the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) was founded in 1947 as an international, free association of Lutheran churches dedicated to fostering world-wide Lutheran cooperation and unity in faith, mission, study, and ecumenical participation. Among the mission responsibilities and activities of the LWF's Department of World Mission and its successor body, the Department of Church Cooperation, was the direction of monies and assistance to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT), formed in 1967 by a merger of seven Tanzanian Lutheran churches.

From the 1940s, the USANC, as the Executive Committee of the National Lutheran Council (1947-1966), as a separate standing body (1967- 1976), and as Lutheran World Ministries (LWM) (1977-1987), played a large role in supporting the African churches. In 1977, the USANC was reorganized as LWM. In 1987, LWM was terminated and its USANC responsibilities were assumed by the Office/Department for Ecumenical Affairs of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
