Worcester County Atheneum

The Worcester County Atheneum was founded in 1830 for the purpose of establishing a subscription library in Worcester, Massachusetts. There were thirty-four original members who pledged $25 each and the first officers included Reverend George Allen (1792-1883), Frederick William Paine (1788-1869) and William Lincoln (1801-1843). The library consisted of 3000 volumes and later held as a temporary deposit the library of the Worcester (County) Lyceum. (The library of the Lyceum was eventually given to the Free Public Library of Worcester.) The books were housed in the hall of the American Antiquarian Society and when the Worcester County Atheneum disbanded, most of its own collection was transferred to the Antiquarian Society.
