Hamlett, Barksdale, 1908-
Barksdale Hamlett was born in Kentucky. He entered the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY, in 1926 and served in the African and European theaters during World War II as well as in Korea. Hamlett earned the Distinguished Service medal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, and the Bronze Star. His final assignment prior to his retirement in 1964, after more than thirty-eight years of service, was as Army Vice-Chief of Staff. He served as president of Norwich University from 1965 to 1972. Hamlett married Frances Underwood and the couple had one daughter. Additional biographical information on Barksdale Hamlett can be found in the control file with the collection.
