Meinig, D.W. (Donald William), 1924-

Donald W. Meinig, has been faculty in the Geography Department at Syracuse University since 1959. His focus is historical geography, regional geography, cultural geography, social geography, and landscape interpretation. He is best known for his 4 volume publication, The Shaping of America. Meinig received his Ph. D. in Geography from the University of Washington in 1953. Meinig met J. B. Jackson in August 1963 at the Association of American Geographers (AAG) annual meeting in Denver. Familiar with Jackson's publication, Landscape, Meinig invited Jackson to speak at a special session of the meeting dealing with the West. Jackson accepted the invitation and Meinig introduced him to his first AAG audience. A lasting friendship ensued. J. B. (John Brinckerhoff) Jackson, author, editor, and educator, received a B.A. in History and Literature from Harvard in 1932. Jackson briefly studied architecture at MIT before serving as an Army combat intelligence officer in Europe during World War II. After the war, he moved to New Mexico. Jackson is credited with establishing the field of landscape studies and thus, broadening the perspective on the vernacular landscape. Founder of Landscape, a magazine that covered topics relating to cultural landscape, Jackson served as its editor and publisher until 1968. La Cienega, New Mexico was Jackson's home base from 1965 until his death in August of 1996. His books include Landscapes (Amherst: Univ. of Massachusetts Press, 1970), American Space: The Centennial Year (New York: Norton, 1972), Discovering the Vernacular Landscape (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1984), and A Sense of Place, A Sense of Time (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1995).
