Putnam, George W., 1920-

George W. Putnam, Jr., was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. Born on May 5, 1920, in Fort Fairfield, Maine, he was commissioned from Field Artillery Officer Candidate School (1942) and served in the European Theater of Operations (ETO) until 1945; received a regular Army commission (1946) and served with the occupation forces in Japan (1947-1949); graduated from Command and General Staff School (CGSS) (1954) and was assigned to the 28th Field Artillery Battalion, Fort Carson, Colorado; earned the Army aviator badge at Fort Rucker, Alabama (1956); served in Korea with Headquarters (HQ) I Corps; and served in several Department of the Army-level positions including Deputy Director of Army Aviation until 1965 when he was named to command the Army Aviation School at Fort Rucker. Putnam served in Vietnam as Divisional Artillery Commander, Assistant Division Commander, and Chief of Staff, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile); served as Director of Officer Personnel (1968); and commander, 1st Aviation Brigade and aviation officer, United States Army Vietnam (USARV) (1970-1971). He retired from active service as a major general in June 1981.
