Pope, Jane, 1742-1818
Actress Jane Pope was born and raised in the Covent Garden area of London, and began acting as a child. She joined Garrick's Company at the Drury Lane theatre, succeeding her friend, the celebrated Kitty Clive, in character roles, chiefly in low comedy. Aside from a brief contract dispute, she remained with Garrick's company throughout her long career, and made a successful transition from youthful parts to mature roles. She was noted for her dry humor, wry voice, and scandal-free private life.
From the description of Jane Pope letter to Mrs. Clive, 1779 Feb. 22. (Pennsylvania State University Libraries). WorldCat record id: 54996292
