Savannah-Chatham County World War II Memorial Association, Inc. (Ga.). Planning Committee.
The Savannah-Chatham County World War II Memorial Association, Inc. was chartered in March 1947 for the purpose of the erection and maintenance of a suitable memorial to the men and women of Chatham County who gave their lives in World War II. Shortly after its organizational meeting on March 20, 1947, a Review and Planning Committee was appointed to select the memorial; Lowry Axley was elected as chairman of the Committee. The Committee distributed forms to civic and patriotic organizations and individuals for suggestions for the memorial. A memorial hospital was the first choice among the suggestions. A City and County Hospital Authority was then appointed by the Mayor and County Commission to study the feasibility and financing of a general hospital. These efforts resulted in the erection of Memorial Medical Center, which opened on October 21, 1955.
